Once a secluded sliver of Latin America, Costa Rica is a secret no more. Costa Rica is, without a doubt, the hottest travel destination in Central America. (Of course, one could take that literally, too; other than Panama, it is the closest Central American nation to the Equator.) In fact, the country is so popular with tourists that, tourism makes up the biggest piece of its national GDP, more than all its agriculture and industry sectors combined.

Still, Costa Rica remains a place rich in natural wonders, and it’s easy to find many secluded retreats far away from the world of honking cars and skyscrapers: empty beaches that stretch for miles, rivers perfect for inner-tubing and kayaking, and thatch huts that have thin walls because there’s no need to keep out the sound of silence.

If, however, you’re looking for trendsetting hotspots, there have been several openings of large luxury resorts and golf courses; more are sure to be on the way. In San José, the capital of Costa Rica, there are tons of restaurants, bars, and shopping and entertainment districts perfect for travelers.

If you’re the adventurous type, Costa Rica’s got your number. There are many reputable tour services companies that offer all sorts of excursions. Mountain bikers will love it here, and if you don’t have the means to bring your own bike, one can be rented for a small fee. Whether you’d be more into speeding through the jungle on a narrow and harrowing single-track course, or exploring back roads and cattle paths, there are ways for riders of all levels to have fun.

Or, do your best to tear a page from Tarzan as you slide on a zip line amongst the treetops. After a fairly long ascent up a mountain, you’ll strap on a harness and glide from tree to tree. This eco-adventure is becoming quite the phenomenon. How about whitewater rafting? Experienced rafters will love the Upper Reventazón River; this river has a class V section that’s for serious (and brave!) river rats only. There are other options for the rest of us, though; try a Pacuare River trip, which passes through several forests and a beautiful gorge and a relatively more gentle pace.

Of course, you can’t mention Costa Rica without mentioning the beaches; whether you choose the Caribbean or Pacific side, you have lots from which to choose. Puntarenas is the main port on the Pacific, and one that cruise ships visit frequently. This is the main city on the Pacific coast, and you can find a boardwalk, numerous restaurants and hotels.

Tortuguero is beautiful and exotic area north of Limon, which is on the Caribbean side. You can only get here by boat or plane. The area is comprised of natural canals that lie behind a thin strip of land and the ocean. Turtles, caimans, garfish, and manatees are common sights here. Of course, those are just a few out of many areas in Costa Rica that are sure to delight you.
