France evokes thoughts of romance, superb cuisine, and a heartbreaking landscape. The snow-shrouded Alpes of the Pyrenees, the craggy coast of Britanny, the Parisian architecture, the vineyards, the forests, the lakes—France is whatever you make of it.
Of course, the most widely recognized feature in France is the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It’s a must-see when you go to France, and its summit provides a great view of the City of Lights. Paris is home to shops, top notch restaurants, clubs, cafés, bars—you name it. But Paris is far from the only city that will captivate you in France. For example, Honfleur is one of Normandy's most charming fishing ports. Luckily, it escaped major damage in World War II, so much of the port looks like an antique. Honfleur is 500 years older than Le Havre, and dates from the 11th century.
Normandy resonates with the echoes of battles, and there’s no shortage of things for reverent or history-loving people to see. From the Norman conquest of Duke William the Conqueror in 1066 to the heroic sacrifices made by the Allied troops on D-Day, June 6, 1944, this region in northwestern France is battle-hardened. Still, although much of its history is militaristic, Normandy has retained softness to her; the undulating bucolic landscape dotted with farmhouses and the sea breeze off the Channel evoke nothing but pleasant thoughts.
St. Tropez on the French Riviera is a fabled resort town. It’s as flamboyant and sultry as it is drenched by the sun. Artists, composers, novelists, and even film starts come to St-Tropez in summer.Yet there is so much to do outside France’s cities; its landscape is one of the most varied in Europe. From the heart of its countryside to its cities on the Bay of Biscay and further south on the Mediterranean, there’s excitement around every corner. Find yourself white water rafting, mountain biking, caving, scuba diving, and cycling.
Options for those who have a little less daredevil in them can be found far and wide, too. Take a tour of a winery; whether you’re in the Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône, or Corsica region, you won’t find a country more passionate about or its wine.Other places that will make for great photographs and journal entries are the Calanque beaches just east of Marseille, Cannes during the film festival, and Montpellier for its truly Mediterranean atmosphere.
